If you appreciate nature and you are visiting Henderson, Kentucky or neighboring Evansville, Indiana, you must carve out some time to visit The Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve. The Preserve is a 240-acre National Natural Landmark and Indiana State Nature Preserve located at 551 North Boeke Road in the urban western area of Evansville. Its location makes it one of The Country’s largest nature preserves within an urban environment. Wesselman Woods is truly a great place to go for an urban hike in the Henderson/Evansville metro area.

Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve

Wesselman Woods is a nature preserve and a natural landmark of Indiana. The woodlands consist of hardwood forest that includes sugar maple, sweetgum, oak and green ash and is home to over 300 species of wildflowers. It is known to be the largest expanse of virgin forest situated in an urban environment.

This Nature Preserve is an ecosystem of wildlife that provides a much-needed habitat for a large variety of animal species. The animals that can be seen at Wesselman Woods include various mammals, reptiles, amphibians and a large collection of birds. Interestingly, you can also come across some rare species of Fox and Coyote; there are owls and other predatory birds seen inhabiting the woods. There are some reconstructed grasslands, a manmade pond, and amphitheater, and many grassy plains to accommodate a variety of wildlife.

There are so many old trees of various species to be observed–most of which are as old as 400 years! One of the tallest trees in the state is tulip popular species located within this reserve that is 147 feet tall. There are over 6 miles of hiking trails in this dense untouched forest.

The Park is open Tuesday through Saturday 9 am to 5 pm and Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm. It is closed on Mondays and has shortened hours in the winter. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Be aware that groups who arrive without a reservation may be denied access to the park if there is a scheduled program in progress.

Here’s a heads-up on guidelines that must be observed within this park; they include no jogging within the premises, pets are not allowed, smoking is prohibited, feeding of the wildlife’s is not allowed and observation from a distance is advised. More so, littering of the environment is prohibited, vehicles are also not allowed in and visitors are not allowed to harvest any of the plants; so be sure to abide by these rules to enjoy a swell time within Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve.
